One stump in the way of a project, or a whole lot of them left from a clearing job — we pull them roots and all with the machine, or grind them below grade, and leave the ground level and ready to plant, pave, or build on.
There are two ways to be rid of a stump, and the right one depends on what goes there next. Grinding turns the stump and surface roots into chips a foot or so below grade — fast, clean, and perfect when you just want the stump gone under a lawn or a garden bed. Full extraction pulls the stump and its root ball out with an excavator, which is what you want before a driveway, an addition, or anywhere the ground has to bear weight — because a ground stump still has a rotting root mass underneath that settles and leaves a soft spot years later.
We backfill and grade the hole either way, haul the grindings and root balls, and don’t bury wood on the lot — buried stumps are exactly what leaves a lawn dimpled with sinkholes down the road.
Single stumps commonly run $150–$500 to grind depending on diameter and access; full excavator extraction and multi-stump lots are quoted per site, and it’s usually far cheaper to handle stumps while our machine is already on the property for other work. Free site walk, flat quote.
If the spot is staying lawn or garden, grinding below grade is faster and cheaper. If a driveway, slab, addition, or anything load-bearing is going there, dig it out — a ground stump leaves a buried root ball that rots and settles into a soft spot. We chase the surface roots as well, which matters most near walkways and patios where a big root can heave the surface later. Deep tap roots left far below grade rot in place harmlessly once the stump is gone.
Per-stump cost drops sharply in volume, and dramatically if we’re already on site for clearing or site work. A lot full of stumps is quoted as one job after a quick look — almost always less than pricing each stump alone.
