Who Else You'll Need

The excavator is one seat at the table. Depending on your project, some of these pros come first — and hiring them in the right order saves real money. Each links to the official NH roster, so you're picking from licensed people, not ads.

The Team

Hire These In Roughly This Order

Land Surveyor — before anything touches a boundary

Pins located, lines staked, and (for builds) the site plan. Clearing to an assumed line is how neighbors end up in court. Find one: NH Land Surveyors Association directory or the state's OPLC license lookup.

Septic Designer — before the site plan is final

If there's no sewer, the septic design drives where everything else can go. Designers work from test pits (we dig those). NHDES keeps the roster: NHDES Subsurface Systems — permitted designers & installers.

Licensed Forester — when the timber might matter

On larger cuts, a forester tells you what the wood is worth and handles the Intent-to-Cut paperwork a timber harvest requires. Roster: NH Division of Forests & Lands — licensed foresters.

Certified Wetland Scientist — when the ground might be wet

A delineation up front beats an NHDES enforcement letter later. The state certifies them: NH OPLC — certified wetland scientists.

Well Driller — new builds off town water

Well location interacts with septic setbacks — another reason design comes before digging. Licensed list: NH Water Well Board.

Engineers, Concrete & Paving — as the build dictates

Structural/civil engineers via the state license lookup; foundation contractors and pavers are best found by asking whoever's doing your dirt — we see their work from the hole up and know who backfills clean.

The Order In One Line

Survey → septic design (test pits) → site plan & permits → clearing → dig → utilities → grade. The expensive mistakes are almost always this list run out of order — the full walkthrough is in the site-prep guide.
